Completed iPhone app using Flash exporter

Filed under: Flash,Games, design — Sam at 9:49 am on Thursday, July 22, 2010

toys for kids yeah

After a 2 day sprint and massive battle with multiple exporting issues i managed to complete my iPhone app for BBC Learning and Cbeebies. This isn’t an app that will go into production or anywhere near the appstore but as I described in my previous posts, for demo purposes and skill development with multi touch functionality, this project was perfect.

My second day of sprint mainly consisted of finalising the basic hitTest and math functionality the game needed and completing a basic GUI for the game itself (which was the easiest part).

I created an environment where only 1 variable need changing to effect the difficulty of the game. This would make adding a stage system very easy later on.

I added some basic teaching material and some simple formulae for younger users to understand when doing their fractions. As a product, the app is a solid little product but like everything could be majorly improved with more time.

I would make a few changes to the logic of the game, making it less obvious and a little more challenging. You can in fact complete the exercise in just 2 moves. With more time I would have spent adding to the aesthetic of the app and its tweens between states. This is massively important for this age group, the more shinny the product, the more touchable and usable it will become.

I would like to carry on producing iPhone demos with flash but there are other projects and maybe Objective C which i’d like to investigate first.

Boo finished

So I finally finished Boo last night, my Kid Robot Munny custom toy. I finished him off with a few coats of matte clear coat varnish and horray, I’m very please, for my first Munny he looks pretty tight. I’ll replace the picture with a better one at some point but I only had my iPhone and thats the best i could do.

Boo painting finished

So I finally got around to painting and attaching the tongue to the body base. I did a primer coat with an acrylic primer white. This acted as the base white for the model. I then drew the body parts on with pencil and then painted the details in acrylic. I outlined the details in sharpie red and black to define them. Next step is to lacquer the model with a vanish. I’m thinking a matt vanish will work best :)

Polymer clay tongue

tongueI created the Tongue for my Boo Munny. I did this using polymer clay (Fimo brand) and shaping tools. I cooked the Tongue for 25mins at 180c in a fan oven. My fist attempt at using Fimo, its actually very easy.

Next step is to prime the Boo parts and sand them correctly to bond them after painting. Hopefully prime and paint parts tomorrow.

Munny ‘Boo from Mario’

Filed under: Toys, design — Sam at 11:17 pm on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Today I started working on my Munny customise your own toy. I’ve owned my Munny for a good 12 months and have finally decided I’m going to make three. The first will be based on the ghosts from Super Mario world 3, called Boo.

The head is too conveniently shaped like one to go a miss and I don’t believe anyone has done one like it yet. It means I’m left with a body and again convenient white glasses accessory they came with. I cleaned the factory oil off it today and may get to work on it at the weekend. If only I had lots of money for spray paints.

My other two will be Mario, to go with Boo of course, and one that looks like me. I may also do a Kanye went but I might wait until I’m a bit more experienced with them before I do that.

Above is the photo I took of my un-painted Dunny.

Haven’t got a fudge what a Dunny is?? Check them out at DunnyWorld. A Kidrobot collection
